How to Measure Your Living Room Before Buying a Sofa

Measure the wall the sofa will sit on, then subtract anything that also lives there: a console, a window that opens inward, a door arc. Measure the clear path in front of or beside the sofa — you want people to walk without shuffling. Measure from floor to any window sill or AC unit if the back of the sofa might sit under it.

Photograph the wall with a measuring tape in the frame. That photograph is more useful in a showroom than a memory of ‘it looked big enough’.

The route into the room

Measure door widths, lift size if you have one, and the tightest stair turn. Many Chennai apartments have 80–90 cm doors. A sofa that is 280 cm on the floor still has to arrive as a frame that can turn. Knock-down construction is how large pieces actually get upstairs, not a compromise.

If you are considering an L-shape, measure both legs of the corner and the chaise depth. The second number is the one that surprises people.
